History & Mission Statement of the Company

     In 1945 Ruth and Elliot Handler and Harold Matson founded a company what they called Mattel. It was in a garage in California that they started it. At the beginning they only sold picture frames and doll houses furniture. After Matson resigned because of healthy problems, the Handler turned the company emphasis to toys. After, Mattel was incorporate in California, the company started to gain popularity by creating and sponsoring toys as Mickey Mouse.
     However, it was in 1959 when this company became one of the most important toys’ companies in USA by launching Barbie in the market. The new dolls gave Mattel all the success they needed. The Idea of creating this doll with human characteristics was Ruth Handler that by seeing her daughter playing with paper dolls wanted to create something that make children to think they were playing adult roles. So, she went after Bild Lilli model, which was a doll very famous in the 1950s in Germany. After, her return to USA with the replica, Ruth start to rework in the design of the doll and that is when Barbie born. Since 1959, Barbie birthday is celebrated every March 9. The doll received the name Barbie after Barbara nick name, who is Ruth’s daughter and the inspiration of this creation.
          Mattel. Inc mission with Barbie is to entertain girls, to place them in a world full of happiness and fantasies. Mattel wants to captive new generation of fans and collectors with Barbie. Mattel have made of Barbie a multicultural doll because we can choose any type. We have many options to choose from fairies to princesses, from models to singers and so on. Barbie is the motivation of many girls all around the world and that is what Mattel wants; to motive children to play and enjoy their childhood. Mattel wish to make a difference in the global community by serving children in need, with charitable organizations that serve children, they create joy, they donate. Also, they enrich the lives of their employees by identifying diverse volunteer opportunities and supporting their personal contributions through matching gifts programs.
